Ozempic

Ozempic® is a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine that contains semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist. It helps manage blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes and is now commonly used off-label for weight loss.

It mimics a natural hormone in your body called GLP-1, which:

• Slows digestion so you feel full longer
  
  
• Reduces how much sugar your liver makes
  
  
• Lowers blood sugar levels after meals
  
  
• Helps the body release insulin only when needed

Ozempic® comes in a prefilled pen with a simple needle for once-weekly self-injection. Your provider will show you how to use it correctly, and the dose may be increased over time based on how your body reacts.

The most common side effects include:

• Nausea
  
  
• Vomiting
  
  
• Diarrhea or constipation
  
  
• Fatigue
  
  
• Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) when used with insulin or sulfonylureas
  
  

Some patients experience mild stomach discomfort at first, but this usually fades after a few weeks.

Do not use Ozempic® if you:

• Have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer
  
  
• Have multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2)
  
  
• Are pregnant or planning to become pregnant
  
  
• Have a history of serious side effects to other GLP-1 agonists

• Use herbal supplements or weight-loss products
  
  
• Have a history of kidney disease, pancreatitis, or heart problems
